Semaphore

Description

Once a neglected property near the high street of Semaphore Beach (referred throughout the project as the "Dog House" due to the name from graffiti left by squatters) has been given a second chance at life. Despite its dilapidated state, the charm of the original home and the relaxed feel that comes from being in such close proximity to the beach served as inspiration for a contemporary executive retreat. In a nod to the original cottage, the new dwelling embraces both masonry and lightweight construction methodologies, rebuilt on the same footprint. Subtle brickwork banding was integrated to pay homage to the past, while the rhythm of the front fence and space reflects an ease and ebbing flow of the coastal lifestyle and patterns of the ocean. Combining both heritage with more modern functionality, the aim was to create a refined yet relaxed beachside home. Designed for a fly-in/fly-out professional, the home also needed to accommodate two private suites specifically tailored for short-term stays. Northern-facing social spaces are flooded with natural winter light and an outward connection, reducing a reliance on energy. Although somewhat limited, elements from the surrounding garden are integrates with the interior, with a focus to bring the outdoors in, and retain a key coastal connection.
