Our Boy Roy

Description

Our Boy Roy is a suburban hospitality venue in Clarence Park, South Australia, that combines retail, grab-and-go options, and café culture into one unique experience. Designed to cater to both introverts and extroverts, the space offers a contemporary take on the traditional corner store that welcomes all. At its core, the project draws inspiration from the client’s personal history, with ‘Roy’ representing a sentimental connection to a family name and a grunge-infused past. The design embraces raw and layered elements, with exposed building materiality setting the base, and reflecting ‘Roy’s own rough and unpolished persona. Textures and tactile elements are then inserted to echo punk and grunge fashion, creating a distinctive aesthetic that feels simultaneously edgy and approachable. High-end coffee offerings, including unique coffee flights that present a single brew in five different ways were initially conceived to push the traditional offering, and a menu of quick takeaway items and café staples to accompany that approach. Our Boy Roy was imagined as more than just a place to grab a coffee or sandwich—it was designed as a space where a strong sense of personality and history informs every detail. From the material choices to the naming and developing of a unique personality for the offering, the design celebrates a blend of nostalgia, rawness, and contemporary hospitality.
