George

Description

George is a two-bedroom guest addition to a heritage-listed home in Norwood, designed with a focus on maximising northern light and creating a connection to the outdoors. Working within a budget, the design integrates simple yet effective strategies to enhance the living experience without compromising the historical integrity of the original dwelling, which is recognised as a local Heritage Place by the NPSP Council. Perforated metal cladding wraps the exterior, casting dappled light into the interior spaces and creating a soft, diffused glow throughout the day. The integration of a generous void internally also then acts to draw natural light deep into the ground-floor living area, while opening up the first-floor study to views of the surrounding established tree canopies. Looking out from the top of the stairs is a framed view of the Adelaide Hills, anchoring the home amongst the wider context of the area, city and landscape. At ground level, the existing garden spaces have been carefully preserved and integrated amongst the new insertions, where a blurring of the lines between indoors and outdoors encourages nature to become part of the everyday lived experience of the home. Contained and with penetrations that balance light and dark, privacy and an openness, George is a considered, light-filled extension that respects both its heritage context while offering a contemporary comfort and calm.
